How is this different from my university career center?

Career centers are a great resource. Use them! They are also built to serve thousands of students, which means personalization has limits. With 1st Big Hire, you get a dedicated coach who understands your goals and strengths, and works with you to build and execute a personalized strategy. Some clients need more help with professional writing while others benefit greatly from practicing mock interviews. We will customize the approach to your specific needs. Think of the career center as a solid starting point. Think of us as the edge that gets you hired.

What if I don't know what career I want yet?

Good news! You don't need to have it all figured out. Most early professionals switch jobs, industries, or even careers in their first few years out of college. What you do need is a smart starting point. We help you identify what actually matters to you, and build a clear path forward based on your values, experiences, and goals.

How long does the coaching program take?

Coaching packages are typically 1–3 months, depending on your starting point and goals. For undergraduates who want to start early, plan for about a month to translate your academics, skills, and goals into a sharp resume and LinkedIn profile, while identifying summer opportunities to build expertise and skills. For upperclassmen and recent graduates, the first month is about fine-tuning your story, clarifying your goals, and equipping you with strategies for networking, interviewing, and finding the right companies and roles. From there, we shift into execution mode to customize cover letters, sharpen interview responses, and tailor your networking approach until you're a top candidate walking away with offers.

Is this only for certain majors or industries?

Not at all. The skills that get you hired, and help you thrive once you're there, aren't major-specific. Professional communication, showing the value you bring, building relationships, and owning your commitments are human skills. They travel with you no matter where you land. Of course! During the discovery call, we discuss goals, process, and desired outcomes. Once we get going, it's important for the client to take ownership of the process.
